ABOUT KATHY LYONS
An
experimental art class that she attended 5 years ago, lead long time fabric
artist and local business owner Kathy Lyons into a whole new career as an award
winning water color artist. Prior to the class, Lyons had sold her painted
clothing and furniture through Accents, her downtown Traverse City gift shop.
Kathy
also did interior design and wedding planning during the 14
years that she owned the store. Internationally known artist Charles Murphy’s
experimental watercolor class opened up a new avenue of expression for Lyons,
whose work ranges from the traditional to the impressionistic.
Her
pieces, which have won awards at juried art shows and been exhibited in Chicago
as well as Michigan, include flowers, waterfalls and lighthouses, winter scapes
and other scenes drawn from the natural beauty of Traverse City, Michigan. Her
downtown roots are reflected in several paintings including one featuring the
historic Traverse City Opera House. Another painting of a rainy street scene
includes Martinek’s landmark curbside clock.
Trips to
Hawaii last winter and France more recently are also providing inspiration for
Lyons’ work. She has also received commissions to create works for several
area businesses and art collectors. Lyons now devotes herself full time to
her artwork and teaching.
